Our organisation is committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions over time and achieving net zero by 2050.
We have already taken the following steps to reduce our environmental impact:
- Introduced clearly labelled recycling bins to encourage correct waste separation.
- Checked which materials our waste contractor accepts, including the paper cups used at the patients’ water machine.
- Replaced plastic drinking cups with paper cups at the patients’ water machine.
- Keep lights switched off when they are not needed, while maintaining patient and staff safety.
To strengthen our progress, we will work towards:
- Monitoring energy use: Record electricity and heating consumption to establish a baseline, identify opportunities to reduce use and review progress annually.
- Improving energy efficiency: Switch off unused equipment where safe, use energy-saving settings, and move towards LED lighting and energy-efficient appliances as replacements are needed.
- Reducing waste: Review disposable items, reduce unnecessary printing and packaging, and use reusable alternatives where appropriate and consistent with infection prevention requirements.
- Making responsible purchasing decisions: Consider energy efficiency, durability, packaging and suppliers’ environmental commitments when purchasing products and services.
- Reducing travel emissions: Encourage walking, cycling, public transport and shared journeys where practical, and use remote meetings when appropriate.
- Assigning responsibility: Nominate a staff member to coordinate these actions, encourage staff participation and review progress each year.
- Developing an emissions reduction plan: Build an understanding of emissions from energy, travel, purchased goods and waste, and use this information to set measurable reduction targets.
We will review and update our actions annually and share progress publicly. All changes will support the continued delivery of safe, high-quality patient care
